How to Write an Escalation Ticket That Gets Answered

Engineers triage by clarity. An escalation that states impact, evidence, and a specific ask jumps the queue; one that says "still down, please check" waits. Here is the format that gets answered.

The escalation format

ESCALATION — [Ticket #]
IMPACT: [What is down, since when, who/what is affected]
DEVICE: [Hostname, rack/U, port]
TESTED:
- [Test] → [exact result]
- [Test] → [exact result]
RULED OUT: [Cable, optic, port — with how you know]
HYPOTHESIS: [Most likely cause and why]
ASK: [The specific decision, access, or test you need]
NEXT UPDATE: [Time]

Weak vs. strong

Link still down. Swapped some cables. Please advise.

ESCALATION — Link down on srv-1042 (rack C12 U18, Eth1) since 13:40; single host, no redundancy. Tested: inspected/cleaned/reseated fiber (no change), known-good patch cable (no link LED), known-good optic (no link), alternate switch port Gi1/0/22 (link up with test laptop). Ruled out: cable, optic, server NIC. Hypothesis: original switch port is faulty. Ask: approve moving production to Gi1/0/22 or dispatch switch diagnostics. Next update 15:00.
